Saturday Night Live fans were in for a special treat this past weekend, when the first new Lonely Island music video dropped from the upcoming summer comedy Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping. Andy Samberg appears as his pop alter ego Conner4Real, who sings about his girlfriend’s particular love making ways. The song is called Finest Girl (Bin Laden Song), and it’s another bonafide Lonely Island classic. A full soundtrack list has not yet been announced.
Universal Pictures’ Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping is headlined by musical digital-shorts superstars Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone. Collectively, they are known as The Lonely Island! The comedy goes behind the scenes as singer/rapper Conner4Real (Andy Samberg) faces a crisis of popularity after his sophomore album flops, leaving his fans, sycophants and rivals all wondering what to do when he’s no longer the dopest star of all.
The latest comedy from blockbuster producer Judd Apatow co-stars Sarah Silverman, Tim Meadows and Maya Rudolph and many of the biggest names in comedy and music in cameo performances. Co-directed by Schaffer and Taccone and written by The Lonely Island trio, Popstar is also produced by Rodney Rothman (producer of Get Him to the Greek, Forgetting Sarah Marshall; co-writer of㺖 Jump Street), as well as Samberg, Schaffer and Taccone. Popstar will infiltrate theater screens this summer on June 3, 2016.
Some of the most notable shorts from Lonely Island include their Emmy-winning “D**k in a Box” (with Justin Timberlake), “Lazy Sunday” (a rap about The Chronicles of Narnia) and “The Natalie Portman Rap,” “YOLO (featuring Adam Levine & Kendrick Lamar),” “I Just Had Sex (featuring Akon)” and “I’m on a Boat (featuring T-Pain).” The Lonely Island’s debut album, “Incredibad,” was released by Universal Republic in February 2009 and is the first comedy album to reach No. 1 on iTunes.
In addition to the first music video from Popstar, the new trailer and poster and photo debuted last week. We’ve included them here again in case you missed them the first time around. While it has never been explicitly stated that the Connor character is a parody of Justin Bieber, there is plenty of evidence to support it, with this latest trailer showing footage of a baby Conner delivering an amazing performance on the drums, presumably mocking footage of a young Bieber at the drum kit. We also see footage of Conner showing off his “skills” on the basketball court as an adult, which could be mocking the basketball videos Bieber has sent out in the past. Take a look at the new first music video courtesy of Youtube, along with the trailer and poster Popster: Never Stop Stopping. It could just be the surprise hit of the summer.
