Suits

The dust has settled, and TV fans now know which shows will be coming back this summer and this fall for new seasons. There’s a wide variety of series returning during the upcoming season and many of them are in years that could be huge. Here are five returning shows that you definitely don’t want to miss.

1. Suits (USA)

This is a game-changing year for Suits. The cliffhanger that last season ended on has cleared the slate for TV’s best-written series, meaning that almost anything is possible. Patrick J. Adams should have a breakout year with how Mike was left when we saw him last. And with Gina Torres (above) having landed the lead role in an ABC pilot this offseason, that’s raised the question of if she might be ready to move on to other projects. Suits always has plenty to offer but this season could be a huge shift both on and off camera.

2. Tyrant (FX)

Tyrant is perhaps the least noisy of FX’s original series. It’s quietly made its way to a third season without much fanfare. But it’s trying a few new things this season to try and change that, most notably the additions of Chris Noth (The Good Wife) and Annet Mahendru (The Americans) to the cast. What will they bring to the table? This feels like a make or break year for the Middle Eastern political thriller slash family drama.

3. Casual (Hulu)

Comedy is alive and well on Hulu, where Golden Globe nominee Casual kicked off its second season on Tuesday. The Jason Reitman-produced show came back with a bang, giving plenty of material to Valerie (Michaela Watkins), Alex (Tommy Dewey) and Laura (Tara Lynne Barr) in their continual navigation of dysfunctional life. Season 2 has added The League‘s Katie Aselton in a multi-episode role. Casual is the standard-bearer for live action comedy right now, and it seems to have come back just as strong.

4. Secrets & Lies (ABC)

TV networks have really latched on to the idea of anthology-type series recently. That includes Secrets & Lies, which has reinvented itself for Season 2. Juliette Lewis is back as the hard-charging detective but now she’s got a lot of fresh faces – and it’s those fresh faces that make this one to keep an eye on. Michael Ealy (Splinter Cell), Jordana Brewster (Fast & Furious), and Kenny Johnson (Saving Grace) have the potential to make this show must-see TV.

5. Murder in the First (TNT)

TNT’s newest procedural had a great premise for its second season, but never quite lived up to it. Can Season 3 turn that around? We’ll have to wait and see. Murder still has a strong core cast with Taye Diggs, Kathleen Robertson and company. But it needs to regroup on the writing side. Season 3’s plotline of a high-profile murder should give the show that opportunity. Yet especially as TNT axed some good shows over the offseason, we’ll be waiting to see if this one cements its place on the schedule.
