Tomb Raider Reboot Gets Spring 2018 Release Date

Now that Alicia Vikander has been set to play Lara Croft in MGM and Warner Bros.’ long-awaited Tomb Raider reboot, the studios have finally set a release date. Warner Bros. will release Tomb Raider on March 16, 2018, a date the studio had previously set aside for a DC Comics project, which most believed was The Flash. That project recently lost its director, Seth Grahame-Smith, who was quickly replaced by Rick Famuyiwa (Dope), but the superhero movie doesn’t have an official release date at this time.

The Hollywood Reporter has news of this release date, which comes just a few months after Warner Bros. made a different release date shift. Back in April, Warner Bros. pushed its Jungle Book sequel into 2018, while setting an October 6, 2017 release date for an untitled event film. There had been speculation that this slot could be used for the Tomb Raider reboot, which, at the time, was eyeing Star Wars: The Force Awakens star Daisy Ridley to play the iconic Lara Croft. However, just a few weeks later, Alicia Vikander landed the coveted role in this reboot, although no supporting cast members have come aboard quite yet.

While no story details have been confirmed, it has been rumored that this reboot will serve as an origin story for Lara, with the screenplay being adapted from the most recent Tomb Raider video game that was released back in 2013. On the big screen, Angelina Jolie originated the role in 2001’s Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, reprising the character in 2003’s Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle Of Life. The first Tomb Raider still remains the highest-grossing video game adaptation domestically, with $131.1 million, but this year’s Warcraft became the biggest global video game movie ever with $422 million, nearly 90% of which came from foreign markets.

Roar Uthaug (The Wave) is directing Tomb Raider from a script by Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus (Iron Man), Evan Daugherty (The Huntsman: Winter’s War) and Marti Noxon (The Glass Castle). MGM and Warner Bros. are co-producing the movie, after acquiring rights from GK Films, with MGM overseeing production. Now that a release date has been set, it remains to be seen when production may get under way.

As of now, Tomb Raider doesn’t have any direct competition in its March 16, 2018 release slot, but there will be plenty of high-profiles movies opening around it. Disney will launch its recently-announced animated sequel Wreck-It Ralph 2 on March 9, 2018, with 20th Century Fox’s Annubis, Sony’s Peter Rabbit and an untitled DreamWorks Animation/Blue Sky production all opening on March 23, 2018. Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One is also set to open on March 30, 2018. Stay tuned for more on this Tomb Raider reboot as more information comes in.
