In the wake of the horrific shooting of 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida last month, activists participated in anti-gun protest rallies across the country as a wider national conversation took hold. On Sunday, it will reach the Oscars red carpet.
Red carpets have, more than ever, become something of a platform to bring visibility to social issues and debates: Recently, for example, celebrities wore black to the Golden Globes to symbolize their solidarity with Time’s Up, also putting on special pins emblazoned with the movement’s name. With Time’s Up forgoing a dress code for the Oscars red carpet on Sunday (for a pretty important reason), celebrities will wear a pin to bring attention to the country’s gun violence epidemic—and the laws that have yet to curtail it—instead.
According to People, a number of celebrities attending Sunday’s Oscars are reportedly planning to wear mini orange American flag pins in a call to end gun violence. The pin—conceptualized by Everytown for Gun Safety—serves to raise awareness around existing gun control laws and support the call to action that’s gained momentum in the aftermath of the Parkland shooting.

Recently, through a narrow definition of what constitutes a “public mass shooting,” The Washington Post estimated that 1,077 people have been killed in such incidences in the U.S. to date. Since the news of the Parkland mass shooting broke in February, public figures from celebrities and news anchors to former Presidents and Olympic athletes have used their platforms to call for immediate reform of current gun control legislation.
We don’t yet know exactly who will walk Sunday’s red carpet sporting the orange flag pin in solidarity with Everytown. But as the teens of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School gear up for their massive March for Our Lives protest in Washington, D.C. on March 24, it’s no question that these students already have the support of thousands—both on and off the red carpet.
