While it was original stated that The Maze Runner: The Death Cure wouldn’t be shifted out of its February 17, 2017 release slot following the on-set injuries obtained by star Dylan O’Brien, that plan has now changed. The YA fantasy adventure is being delayed by almost a year while the actor recovers. The movie will now debut on January 12, 2018. This has caused 20th Century Fox to do some in-house restructuring, which means new release dates for quite a few anticipated releases.
The Death Cure was originally slated to go up against quite a few heavy hitters, and the move might be for the best. Opening on February 17 of next year are the anticipated sequel Bad Boys 3 and the Stephen King adaptation The Dark Tower. Warner Bros. also has the comedy Fist Fight opening in this frame, which pits Ice Cube and Charlie Day in a brawl amongst high school teachers that is being compared to the 80s classic Three O’Clock High. Universal has the supernatural historical drama The Great Wall set for this date, with Relativity positioning the long-awaited horror sequel The Strangers 2 here as well. Don’t be surprised if you hear one of these other movies has moved away from this crowded spot on the calendar.
The Maze Runner 3 is now only set to face off against one other movie. And it’s an animated family sequel that could give the film a run for its money. The Death Cure and Gnomeo & Juliet 2: Sherlock Gnomes are the only two movies currently set to open during the entire month of January. They will be coming in the wake of Star Wars: Episode VIII, which could still take the #1 spot at the box office in this late slot.
The Maze Runner: The Death Cure was forced to shut down production after star Dylan O’Brien sustained critical injuries while filming a stunt gone wrong. The accident happened back on March 28. There were conflicting reports about the extent of O’Brien’s injuries, and they turned out to be worse than originally reported. On April 29, 20th Century Fox halted all production indefinitely. No resume date has been announced at this time. Reports have claimed that the actor suffered a concussion, a facial fracture and several lacerations from a motorcycle stunt that didn’t go according to plan.
In the wake of The Maze Runner 3’s delay, Deadline announces that 20th Century Fox has moved around some of its other upcoming releases. Director Shane Black’s Predator reboot has shifted from March 2, 2018 to February 9, 2018. And two untitled Marvel movies are being swapped around the docket. The first moves from January 12, 2018 to March 2, 2018. The second actually skips back a month, from July 13, 2018 to June 29, 2018. It isn’t known what these movies are, but currently sitting without release dates are The New Mutants, The X-Force, Gambit and Deadpool 2. Fox is also planning X-Men 7.
Other release date shifts include the A.I. thriller Morgan, which gets a wide release on September 2 of this year. Keeping Up With The Joneses, which features the stealer ensemble of Gal Gadot, Isla Fisher, Jon Hamm and Zach Galifianakis, is releasing a month later on October 21. Then on November 11, we’ll see the debut of Warren Beatty’s latest directorial effort Rules Don’t Apply. Shifting from March 24, 2017 to February 17, 2017 is A Cure for Wellness. The female-led spy thriller Red Sparrow gets a November 10, 2017 release date. The remake Murder On The Orient Express is arriving a few days earlier than expected, dropping Wednesday, November 22, 2017 instead of November 10. And finally, the James Cameron produced, Robert Rodriguez directed Alita: Battle Angel is getting a wide release on July 20, 2018.
