Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema bring their video game adaptation Rampage to theaters starting today, which will likely lead to renewed interest in the original video game it’s based on. For those who don’t have a classic arcade, or a retro video game console nearby, fans can play the original Rampage arcade game online, for free, on the official Rampage movie website. There is also another free game on the site that is inspired by both the original arcade and the new movie as well.
The original arcade game was released in 1986 by Bally Midway, where players control one of three massive creatures, George the ape, Ralph the werewolf and Lizzie the lizard. To move on to the next level, players must destroy all of the buildings, while also eating various items such as milk, turkey, fruit and toast, and even the tiny people these monsters encounter. However, there are items these creatures can ingest that will cause damage such as a cactus, toaster and poison.
There are a massive 768 levels in Rampage, with the gameplay set over a 128-day period. Each level is a new city, with the game starting in Peoria, Illinois and ending in Plano, Illinois, where players receive a “mega vitamin bonus” that heals all the monsters and also awards a large point bonus. After the initial 128-day cycle, it repeats itself five times, and at the end of the 768th level, the game resets itself back to Day One. Since fans don’t have to keep pumping in quarters to play this game, if you have enough time to kill, you could go through all 768 levels for free.
There is also a new game that is available for free, which is much more fast-paced than the original game, and only features the ape George. In this game, dubbed Rampage City Smash, all you have to do is press any button on your keyboard to make George jump, as players try to avoid the numerous electrical signs on the edge of the buildings George is climbing. The game does all the climbing for you, and all you have to do is press a button to cause George to jump to the opposite building to avoid these obstacles. Once you run out of energy from either hitting the signs, or taking fire from numerous helicopters, the game is over. Once the game is over, there is a link to play the original arcade classic as described above.
The original game was an arcade classic, which was later ported over to console systems such as the Atari 2600, Atari 7800, the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), Sega Master System (SMS), Nintendo 64 and more. The game’s success lead to numerous sequels, such as Rampage World Tour, Rampage Universal Tour, Rampage Through Time, Rampage Puzzle Attack and the latest version, Rampage: Total Destruction.
