Is Armie Hammer Finally Joining the DC Movie Universe?

Next year, DC Comics fans will finally get the superhero ensemble movie they’ve been waiting years for, when Justice League hits theaters on November 17. Some fans may remember that there was almost another version of the Justice League nearly a decade ago, directed by George Miller, that never came to fruition, due to the writers strike in 2007, which featured a cast of rising stars, including Armie Hammer as Batman. Today we have word that, nearly a decade later, Armie Hammer may be joining the DC Extended Universe in an upcoming movie, which may actually be Ben Affleck’s The Batman.

Batman-News noticed that Armie Hammer was recently followed on Twitter by both DC Films president Geoff Johns, who is also co-writing The Batman with director/star Ben Affleck, and Joe Manganielllo, who was confirmed in September to play Deathstroke in The Batman. While this is by no means a confirmation that Armie Hammer has been cast in some capacity on The Batman, Twitter activity has foreshadowed real news in the past. Just before Rick Famuyiwa signed on to direct The Flash, Batman-News noticed that the filmmaker had started following a number of DC-related Twitter accounts, such as Geoff Johns Gal Gadot, Zack Snyder, Ben Affleck, Ray Fisher and Jason Momoa.

Even if Armie Hammer has landed a role in this Batman reboot, we don’t have any indication of who he may be playing. Aside from Ben Affleck as Batman and Joe Manganiello as Deathstroke, no other cast members have been confirmed. It is believed that J.K. Simmons (Commissioner Gordon) and Jeremy Irons (Alfred Pennyworth) will reprise their roles from Justice Leauge, but nothing is set in stone at this time. Warner Bros. hasn’t issued a release date quite yet, but Time Warner president Jeff Bewkes teased that the movie is “a year and a half out.”

Last month, Joe Manganiello said that production starts in the spring of 2017, but that production date has yet to be confirmed. No story details have been released at this time, but Ben Affleck has teased that this story will be mostly original, although there will be parts of the story that will be taken from unspecified comic books. There were rumors that this movie will feature the iconic villain Red Hood, but that report was debunked. There has also been talk that it will feature “just about every major bad guy” from the Batman comics.

Back in April, Warner Bros. set October 5, 2018 and November 1, 2019 release dates for two unspecified DCEU movies, with many speculating that one of those dates is being held for this Batman movie. The studio hasn’t confirmed what movies will be taking those dates at this time, but it’s possible that one of the other movies could be Suicide Squad 2, which the studio reportedly wanted to start filming next year. Director David Ayer and his Suicide Squad star Will Smith are currently filming Bright for Netflix, but it hasn’t been confirmed if they will return for Suicide Squad 2. Hopefully we’ll have more on The Batman in the near future.
