Earlier this week, Fast and Furious 8 jumped from shooting exteriors in Cuba to a locked down set where most of the main actors reunited for photos and a video. Today, we get our first real look at star Dwayne Johnson, who returns to reprise his role as Hobbs. But as you can tell from this post on his personal Instagram, the man looks a lot different. And there is a reason for that. The WWE Superstar turned action icon had this to say about returning for his Agent character.
“When you strip a man of all he has. All that’s important to him. You force him to return to his roots…And sometimes that’s a very dangerous and twisted place. If I was going to return for another FAST & FURIOUS I wanted to come in and disrupt the franchise in a cool way that got fans fired up and their blood pumping to see a new version of Hobbs and his “Daddy’s gotta go to work” mentality and set the table in a cool way for where the character goes in the future.”
Dwayne Johnson obviously loves playing Hobbs, but he sounds unsure of the character’s future. Earlier in the week it was teased by his own personal producer that Universal Pictures might be planning a standalone spinoff for Hobbs. While Johnson certainly isn’t against that idea, he also doesn’t sound like he’d mind retiring the character either. He says this.
“Maybe it’s a spinoff movie. Maybe it’s more #FF movies. Or hell maybe Hobbs just gets on his motorcycle and rides off into the sunset never to be seen again. Either way, I’ve had a solid first week of shooting, good to be back with the ohana, good to work again w/ my bud and director F. Gary Gray and our home studio of UNIVERSAL, as always have been the best partners to me and my #SevenBucksProds team. Most importantly… you guys around the world will really dig this new version of the role, ’cause as we always say, disrupters dent the universe. #Hobbs #TwistedRoots #1Disrupter #1Savage #F8″
Luke Hobbs is a government bounty hunter and DSS (Diplomatic Security Service) agent who was first introduced in Fast Five, working to bring Dom and his crew down. He returned in Fast & Furious 6 to ask Dom for help in taking down Owen Shaw, the leader of an international crime syndicate. He last showed up in Furious 7, where he didn’t have much screen time, but arrived in the third act to save the day. Fast & Furious 8 marks The Rock’s 4th movie in the franchise.
Universal Pictures has announced that Fast & Furious 8 (referred to some as Fast 8) sets up an all-new trilogy with a new villain played by Charlize Theron. It hits theaters on April 14, 2017. Fast and Furious 9 has already been given a release date of April 19, 2019. And everything will come to a close on April 2, 2020 in Fast and Furious 10. At this time, no actors have been confirmed for the final two installments. And it’s too early to say whether or not the very busy Dwayne Johnson will be back, with Agent Hobbs riding yet again. We’ll just have to wait and see.
