The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been around for 8 years now, and it continues to expand. With movies like Thor: Ragnarok and Spider-Man: Homecoming snatching up talent left and right, it seems like every actor and actress in Hollywood is going to get a crack at a Marvel character at some point. So naturally, what everyone wants to know is, who is Anna Kendrick going to play in the MCU? Well, we may have an answer to that question.
Anna Kendrick is currently out promoting her latest movie Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates, and like most actors or actresses right now, she is getting asked what superhero or comic book character she might like to play. The question came in an interview with Net-a-Porter, and Kendrick had a pretty out of the box, but probably very welcomed answer. As it turns out, she might want to play Squirrel Girl. Here is what she had to say.
“My brother sent me a Squirrel Girl comic because he thinks I should [play her]. I don’t know what Squirrel Girl does other than be half squirrel, but I could be half squirrel!”
That is obviously a very non-committal answer, and it isn’t like she is saying that she has a die hard passion for the character or is actively chasing the role. Squirrel Girl has a very intense cult following within the Marvel fanbase, and Kendrick’s name has been dropped and bandied about for the role, and she is kind of perfect for it. She was clearly, jokingly saying that playing half squirrel is pretty easy and non-complex when compared to other superheroes and comic book characters, but it is easy to see Kendrick actually doing that.
Many non comic book fans, or even casual comic book fans, are probably saying “Who is Squirrel Girl?” Well, the character first appeared in 1992 and was co-created by comic book legend Steve Ditko along with Will Murray. Her actual name is Doreen Green and she has the ability to communicate with squirrels and has actually defeated some heavy hitting bad guys in the comics. She was created with the intention of being a more lighthearted superhero, given that so many of them are a bit tragic or very brooding, especially in the 90s when she was first created. The character has had a renewed popularity with her recent reboot comic, The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl.
Not only has the character starred in her own comic book series, but she has also been part of several teams over the years, perhaps most notably the Great Lakes Avengers. That team features such heavy hitters as Mr. Immortal, Doorman, at one point Deadpool, and Big Bertha. They are a fairly obscure Avengers team in the grand scheme of things, but that could actually lend some credibility to her inclusion in a Marvel movie at some point. Joe Russo, who of course co-directed both Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Civil War dropped a hint that members of that team may appear in Spider-Man: Homecoming. He gave a small, coy hint, but did name drop the superteam.
“Let’s just say … Great Lakes Avengers.”
It may seem unlikely that a character like Squirrel Girl would ever actually make it to the MCU, but never say never, especially given Joe Russo’s comments. Guardians of the Galaxy was at least as unknown as Squirrel Girl is now, and look what happened there. Other somewhat lesser know characters like Doctor Strange are about to be massive center pieces of the future of the MCU, so the idea that Doreen Green could pop up somewhere, maybe Spider-Man: Homecoming as teased, or even have a mini-series on Netflix, is not totally out of the question. We’ll be sure to look out for Kevin Feige’s announcement of Squirrel Girl for Phase 4 in the near future.
