Just three months after coming aboard to star in Captain Marvel, actress DeWanda Wise has been forced to back out of the project, due to scheduling complications. The actress was brought on as an unspecified character in early January, just days after Netflix issued a Season 2 renewal for the hit series She’s Gotta Have It, which stars DeWanda Wise as the lead character Nola Darling. The actress’ Captain Marvel schedule ultimately conflicted with the She’s Gotta Have It Season 2 schedule, leading to the actress backing out of Captain Marvel.
There is no word yet on who may replace DeWanda Wise in Captain Marvel, or even what character she’ll be playing. When DeWanda Wise joined the cast in January, no details were given about her character, or whether or not the character has any connections to Marvel comics characters. While Marvel Studios hasn’t officially announced the start of production on Captain Marvel yet, there have been no shortage of photos from the set since late January.
Brie Larson, who was confirmed as Carol Danvers back at Comic-Con 2016, leads a cast that also includes Ben Mendelsohn, rumored to be playing the villainous Yon-Rogg, Jude Law as Mar-Vell, a.k.a. Dr. Richard Lawson, Gemma Chan as Minn-Erva and the returning Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, his first Marvel movie since 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron. This story has been confirmed to be set in the 1990s, which may or may not give fans a first look at how Nick Fury actually lost his left eye. Nick Fury has never mentioned in any MCU movie how he actually lost his eye.
Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck (Half-Nelson, Mississippi Grind) are directing from a script that was originally worked on by Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Meg LeFauve (Inside Out), which was then re-worked by Geneva Robertson-Dworet (Tomb Raider). Kevin Feige is producing with Victoria Alonso, Louis D’Esposito, Stan Lee and Jonathan Schwartz executive producing. Marvel has set a March 8, 2019 release date for Captain Marvel, which currently has no direct competition. It will be sandwiched between 20th Century Fox’s The Force, Lionsgate’s Chaos Walking and DreamWorks Animation’s How to Train Your Dragon 3 on March 1, 2019, and Paramount’s Amusement Park and Universal’s untitled thriller from writer-director Jordan Peele on March 15, 2019.
DeWanda Wise is coming off a big year in 2017, where she starred in Netflix’s She’s Gotta Have It as the main character Nola Darling, along with playing Shameeka Campbell in the Fox event series Shots Fired and having a recurring role as Clara on WGN’s Underground. She also stars in the upcoming comedy The Weekend alongside Kym Whitley, Tone Bell and Sasheer Zamata. Deadline broke the news of DeWanda Wise leaving Captain Marvel earlier today. With production still under way, we may learn who will replace her soon.
