Pretty Little Liars (RIP) may have been built on a web of lies, but Ashley Benson isn’t here for any kind of deception IRL—especially when it comes to having her picture taken.
In a recent interview with Stylecaster, Ashley opened up about her discomfort with the photo editing that was done in the show’s promotional materials. “PLL had put up this poster and it was from our first season, and it was completely crazy,” she said. “Nobody looked like themselves.”
Ashley went on to explain that the Photoshopping wasn’t just reserved for the posters—it was an issue across the entire industry. “Even for magazine covers, they’ll photoshop out a mole, make your boobs bigger or your waist four sizes smaller, and you’re like, ‘That’s not even me,'” she said. “You never know how it’s going to turn out because you have no control and you’re not editing the photos, but it sucks when you’re like, ‘Wow. That’s a completely different person.'”
Now, when it comes to photo shoots, she’s determined to keep it real. “I always make sure to tell people, with any sh*t that I do or anyone else does, that unless it’s announced that it’s not Photoshopped, it’s Photoshopped,” she said. “And don’t get down on yourself for not looking a certain way because it takes a lot of hair and makeup, a ton of good lighting, and after the shoot, it’s all this editing.”
After a 2014 GQ shoot of the PLLs received backlash for how heavily it was edited, fellow show alum Troian Bellisario took to Instagram to issue an important statement about whether or not the women were photoshopped in the spread. “OF COURSE WE WERE!” she wrote. “As long as we acknowledge how it was achieved so we know it’s not real… But it’s the same everywhere. It’s the same way on the posters of our show and even in women’s magazines. This industry seems to invest more in perfection than in flaw.”
If only the show kept it as real as its actresses did, fans could have saved themselves a lot of sleepless nights wondering who killed Charlotte DiLaurentis.
