The Fate of the Furious Trailer Brings First Look at Fast 8

If you like explosions, fast cars, ladies wearing very little and family, then today is your lucky day! Universal Pictures, after quite a bit of teasing, has finally unleashed the first full trailer for The Fate of the Furious, the eight installment of the Fast & Furious franchise. Despite having an arguably awful title, this video is very heavy on action and looks to be more of what audiences want when they go to see a Fast & Furious movie.

Universal Pictures has been teasing fans all week leading up to the release of this first trailer. Earlier in the week, they released a short video featurette that showed choice bits of footage from behind-the-scenes of this movie, as well as clips from the entire series leading up to it. Then, they released a very brief trailer tease just a couple of days ago and finally, today, we got the full trailer for The Fate of the Furious. In case all of the action is a bit too distracting to pick on any actual story elements, here is the official synopsis for Fast and Furious 8.

“Now that Dom and Letty are on their honeymoon and Brian and Mia have retired from the game-and the rest of the crew has been exonerated-the globetrotting team has found a semblance of a normal life. But when a mysterious woman (Charlize Theron) seduces Dom into the world of crime he can’t seem to escape and a betrayal of those closest to him, they will face trials that will test them as never before. From the shores of Cuba and the streets of New York City to the icy plains off the arctic Barents Sea, our elite force will crisscross the globe to stop an anarchist from unleashing chaos on the world’s stage…and to bring home the man who made them a family.”

The Fast and The Furious franchise definitely seems to know what it is and why it works so well, but after seven installments there is definitely an attachment to the characters, outside of the blockbuster action fans pay money to see. This time around, we will get to see Dom and Letty finally getting married, but it sounds like there will be trouble in paradise. We are also going to get to see some action taking place in Cuba, New York and some crazy frozen plains somewhere in the Arctic ocean. James Bond was always fun in the snow, so it stands to reason that The Fate of the Furious will be as well, as evidenced by this trailer.

Worldwide, the Fast & Furious franchise has grossed nearly $4 billion, with $1.5 of it coming from Furious 7 alone. So Universal is planning on keeping this cash cow going at least through Furious 10, assuming audiences don’t grow tired of the franchise by then. All signs point to that being very unlikely, since people seem to only become more interested with each installment. So don’t expect F8 to wrap things up entirely, even though the name sort of implies that to be the case.

The cast for The Fate of the Furious includes returning stars Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Nathalie Emmanuel, Elsa Pataky and Kurt Russell. In addition to winner Charlize Theron, the movie will introduce series newcomers Scott Eastwood and Oscar Oscar winner Helen Mirren. The movie is directed by F. Gary Gray, who most recently directed Straight Outta Compton. Be sure to check out the first trailer for the Fate of the Furious for yourself below.
