But sharp-eyed royal watchers noticed something unusual in her perfectly coordinated ensemble: a pair of oversized pearl studs.
Not only were they far larger than Kate’s typically demure accessories, but they were also a departure from the Mappin & Webb “Empress” earrings that she wore to Princess Charlotte’s christening last July.
On Saturday she once again wore the pendant necklace (part of an $8,100 set), but this time she paired it with the pearls.
Turns out, the pearls aren’t real – and the earrings are magnetic!
The Balenciaga studs retail for $591 and are described by Balenciaga as “silver-tone brass studs, which showcase a supersized faux-pearl center and a surround of crystal pavé. The magnetic back makes them suitable for non-pierced ears, too.”

What prompted Kate to wear magnetic earrings? Were her lobes sore? Does Charlotte like to try them on at home? Does this mean the rest of the world will switch to magnetic too? And perhaps most importantly, do they come in Lego size?
