'Mean Girls' Leads the 2018 Tony Awards With 12 Total Nominations

[ad_1]

It seems Mean Girls is the new queen bee on Broadway. The 2018 Tony Awards nominations were just released, and the musical, adapted from the 2004 movie starring Lindsay Lohan, is leading the pack. Announced Tuesday morning at Lincoln Center by Leslie Odom Jr. and Katharine McPhee, the show received a total of 12 nominations, matched only by fellow Broadway newcomer SpongeBob SquarePants. Twelve for you, Glenn Coco! You go, Glenn Coco!

Broadway’s Mean Girls, like the original movie, was written by Tina Fey, but has been updated for a more modern take on the “rules of feminism,” as Gretchen Wieners iconically puts it. “At the the time [Tina Fey] didn’t realize that the movie was going to blow up like it did,” Taylor Louderman, who plays Regina George onstage, told Glamour earlier this month. “So now with the stage production she, I think, seems to understand she has an opportunity to send a message to young people.”

Fey herself is nominated for Best Book of a Musical, while Louderman is nominated for Best Leading Actress in a Musical. Other nods include Best Scene Design in a Musical, Best Costume Design, Best Direction, and Best Choreography. It also snagged a nom for the overall Best Musical award, alongside The Band’s Visit, SpongeBob SquarePants, and Frozen.

So who’s going to come out on top? Our money’s on Cady Heron—she did win Spring Fling Queen, against all odds. For real, though: The Mean Girls musical is a deliciously campy, over-the-top affair that’s just as funny as the original film. Of course, we’ll have to wait and watch the Tony Awards on June 10 on CBS (hosted by Sara Bareilles and Josh Groban) to see who really takes home the gold.
