Infinity War is fast approaching, which is good for some Marvel fans and bad for others who are not looking forward to seeing some of the most beloved superheroes in history potentially die. Robert Downey Jr. has been very vocal about leaving the Marvel Cinematic Universe at the top of his game, leaving many to speculate that Iron Man will not make it out of the battle with Thanos alive. When asked about a possible replacement for Downey Jr., the Russo Brothers declared that idea to be “unthinkable.”
Robert Downey Jr. started the MCU with the first Iron Man movie ten years ago and the matching was perfect. But now, it’s time to start thinking about the end. We know that Downey Jr. is finished with his MCU contract, but will he re-up for some more action in the future? Joe Russo addressed the subject in a new interview, choosing his words very wisely. He had this to say.
“He can’t play the character forever. I am sure there are lots other things he wants to do in his career. But he loves playing the character, I know that, and we love working together. We will see where it goes from here.”
Joe Russo’s sentiment pretty much echoes what Robert Downey Jr. has been talking about for the last several months. The actor has not said that he’s sick of the character or the franchise, but he has insinuated that he wants to go out on top for the fans, instead of being asked to leave. When Joe Russo was asked about a possible replacement actor to play Iron Man, he declared that the idea was “unthinkable.” He explains.
“There is nobody who can take over Iron Man from Robert. I don’t think the audience would accept that. He never mentioned (anything)to us about leaving Iron Man, but it will happen at some point of time.”
The Russo Brothers have been choosing all of their answers very carefully over the course of the last several weeks. Nothing has been spoiled about Infinity War yet, and the directors are going to make sure that it doesn’t happen, especially this late in the promotional campaign. Robert Downey Jr. will probably not return to the MCU after the events of Infinity War and the still untitled Avengers 4, but anything is possible. The actor could show up for cameos from time to time, but the idea of another Iron Man movie will probably never happen.
For now, fans can look forward to seeing Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man in Infinity War, paired with the Guardians of the Galaxy as they attempt to take on Thanos and his Black Order. The movie hits theaters on April 27th, which is now less than 2 weeks away. However, Infinity War will hold its world premiere on April 23rd, which will be the first time that the cast of the movie will have seen the entire finished cut.
