Simon Pegg wrote a plot twist for The Force Awakens. Unfortunately, it just didn’t end up getting used in the final cut of the movie. Pegg, though not even remotely recognizable, plays Unkar Plutt in this Star Wars restarter, the chubby alien junker that owns the Millennium Falcon on Rey’s homeworld of Jakku. As the writer/actor revealed in a recent interview, given that his character owned the Falcon, that gave them a chance to throw a nice little twist into the movie that J.J. Abrams liked enough to film.
The reveal was made by Simon Pegg on a recent episode of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Pegg was there to promote his latest movie, Ready Player One. While discussing his brief turn as an alien in Star wars: The Force Awakens, he revealed that, thanks in part to his vast knowledge of the franchise, he was able to convince J.J. Abrams to film an additional scene for the movie where Unkar Plutt confronts Rey about stealing the Falcon. This isn’t news in itself, but the justification for the scene makes for a cool little twist. Here’s what he had to say about it.
“Unkar Plutt at that point in the film is the owner of the Millennium Falcon. Now as a Star Wars fan growing up, the idea that I would ever be the owner of the Millennium [stuttering] Falcon, it doesn’t make me tongue-tied in any way. I was extremely excited. I shot my scenes on the planet Jakku, which is this sort of desert planet, and then I emailed J.J. Abrams. I said, ‘Look, the Millennium Falcon in the original Star Wars, the Empire put a homing beacon on it and traced it to Yavin 4, the rebel base at the end. What if the homing beacon was still on board, and Unkar activated it and used it to track Rey to Maz’s palace and then he could catch up with her there and have another scene?’ And J.J. was like, ‘Yeah, okay!’ So we shot this scene in the film where Unkar catches up to Rey and he’s gonna shoot her and then Chewbacca pulls his arm off and throws it across the room. It wasn’t in the film in the end because J.J. realized it was pointless. But, I was like, ‘I don’t care, it happened!’ Chewbacca pulled my arm off, end of story, fantastic.”
This particular scene was released as a deleted scene later on, so the scene itself isn’t new. However, the fact that Simon Pegg was the one who made it happen is interesting. Not only that, but his reasoning is pretty sound and it’s actually rather smart. The problem is, the scene didn’t turn out very good. Anyone who has watched the scene knows that it just didn’t play very well, even though it did pay off the whole Wookiees being able to rip someone’s arms from their sockets thing from Star Wars: A New Hope.
Another thing to consider is that Star Wars: The Force Awakens already had a 2 hour and 16 minuter runtime. Scenes like this seem rather superfluous when that is taken into account. Still, Simon Pegg clearly has a lot of Star Wars knowledge and has proven himself as a writer over the years. Disney and Lucasfilm aren’t going to stop making these movies anytime soon.
