Women have been absolutely owning this awards season, even without being fairly recognized for their achievements. By using their red carpet interviews and acceptance speeches as platforms for discussing sexual assault, representation, and feminism, actresses in 2018 have effectively turned the ceremonies themselves into an afterthought in a wider conversation about inequality and representation.
But as far as the 2018 Oscars are concerned, men are still predominantly considered worthy of discussion (at least by the Academy). Announced on Tuesday morning by Tiffany Haddish and Andy Serkis, the list of 2018 Oscar nominees mostly rewards works helmed by men, especially white men. Dunkirk was a favorite, garnering eight nominations, including the coveted Best Director and Best Picture, as was Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, which received seven nominations including Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay. Still, this batch of Oscar nominations was somewhat redeeming for men of color, with Get Out earning director Jordan Peele a very well-deserved first Best Director nod, actor Daniel Kaluuya his first nomination for Best Actor, and nominations for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay.
Women were somewhat more recognized this year, but the split still wasn’t 50/50. In particular, Greta Gerwig got her due by earning Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Picture for Lady Bird, which also got nominated for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress for Saoirse Ronan and Laurie Metcalf, respectively. Meanwhile, renowned director Agnès Varda got a Best Feature Documentary nod for Faces Places. This is also the first time a woman was nominated for Best Cinematography, with Rachel Morrison earning a nomination for Mudbound. Meanwhile, women of color could have showed up far more on the list, but still received some nods. Dee Rees was snubbed for Best Director for her film Mudbound (as well as for Best Picture), but she did get a nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay (shared with Virgil Williams). Plus, this is the first time a film by a director of color has received a Best Supporting Actress nod, with Mary J. Blige earning a nomination for her performance in Mudbound. Blige is also the first person to be nominated for both Best Original Song and Best Supporting Actress.
And it was a nice touch to see all women (and predominantly women of color!)—Gal Gadot, Priyanka Chopra, Rebel Wilson, Salma Hayek, Zoe Saldana, Michelle Rodriguez, Molly Shannon, and Michelle Yeoh—show up in the promos for the first batch of awards.
The 90th Academy Awards—hosted for the second year in a row by Jimmy Kimmel—will air on March 4, 2018 on ABC. See the full list of nominees, below.
