Last summer’s television hit was, without a doubt, Stranger Things. The sci-fi series, which chronicled the disappearance of a young boy and the discovery of a sinister new dimension, kept audiences hooked with its ’80s nostalgia, genuine scares and, of course, Millie Bobby Brown.
So it wasn’t surprising when Netflix announced the creepy crowd-pleaser is returning for a second season. The first chapter ended on a
pretty good note: Will Byers was found and safely returned home — but a scary experience in the bathroom suggested that he (and his friends) aren’t quite finished with the Upside Down. And with Eleven (Brown) missing in action, there’s a lot of intrigue surrounding this next installation. Will the Demogorgon return? What about the talking lights? Not much is known at this time, but there are some details out there that paint a rough picture of what’s in store. Regardless, you should expect, well, stranger things.
Alright, here’s what we know so far:
1. The second season premieres on October 27. Netflix announced this in a promo that premiered on July 11.

2. Whatever is haunting the kids this time around is clearly evil as hell. I mean, just look at the storm clouds in this new season two poster.

3. There will be nine episodes. That’s just one more than the first season.
4. It takes place in 1984. One year after the first season.
5. Four new characters are joining the cast. According to The Hollywood Reporter, three of those characters are Max, a “tough and confident” 13-year-old girl; Billy, Max’s older, super-muscular cousin; and Roman, a new adult between 30 and 38 years old.
6. James Cameron inspired the second season. Stranger Things co-creator Matt Duffer told Entertainment Weekly, “I know movie sequels get a lot of s—, but the ones we look up to aspire to pivot and do something different. There’s Temple of Doom, Aliens, Terminator 2. I guess a lot of this is James Cameron. But he’s brilliant. And I think one of the reasons his sequels are as successful as they are is he makes them feel very different without losing what we loved about the original. So I think we kinda looked to him and what he does and tried to capture a little bit of the magic of his work.”
7. The opening scene of season two doesn’t take place in Hawkins, Indiana. In fact, Matt told EW the second season will “venture a little bit outside” of Stranger Things‘ signature town.
8. The crew will return to the Upside Down. “We definitely want to explore [the Upside Down] a little bit more,” Matt told EW. “There’s a lot we don’t know about the Upside Down at the end of season one.”
9. And there might be more than one monster inside. Matt’s brother and fellow co-creator, Ross, revealed to EW that what’s lurking inside the Upside Down is still a mystery. “If the Monster is dead, was it a singular monster? What else could be out there? We really don’t go in there much until they go in to find Will at the end,” Ross said. “So we’ve opened up this doorway, and to us it’s exciting to talk about, like, what else is behind there? There’s a lot more mystery there to be solved.”
10. We know the titles of all nine episodes. Our personal favorite is “Pumpkin Patch” (but read them all in the video, below).
11. Eleven is probably alive. As evidenced by Brown’s presence at a table read in November 2016.
12. Season two is way scarier than season one (which , to be honest, was already pretty scary). “I think this season will be a lot more dark. A lot more horror-oriented,” Finn Wolfhard (Mike) told Emmy magazine, according to Heroic Hollywood. “I think people are going to like it better than the first season.”
13. Barb is dead. For good. “We saw a slug coming out of her throat. There’s no coming back from that,” ST executive producer Shawn Levy told Variety. Well, that’s that, I guess.
