This Photo of Pink Breastfeeding Her Son Is Proof Moms Are Queens of Multitasking

You know what’s amazing? The fact that women can not only create and grow another human but that they can also produce on-demand, personalized meals to nourish and feed their babies if they so choose. The frustrating part, however, is that when it comes to breastfeeding, it seems like women are damned if they don’t—and damned if they do.

That’s why it’s great when celeb moms like Pink do something that helps break the stigma surrounding breastfeeding. Even those of us who aren’t moms understand how sexualized breasts are, and a disappointing side effect of that is that when moms need to breastfeed in public, they are often subjected to stares and unsolicited comments about the “appropriateness” of doing so in plain view of others. Instead of seeing breasts for what they actually are—a biological fridge stocked with healthy food—some people can’t get over the idea that they’re inherently sexual instead.

On Saturday, Pink combated that idea by posting a selfie that shows her breastfeeding her newborn son while getting glammed up. “Jameson can multitask too,” she captioned the shot, adding the (absolutely perfect) hashtag “#workflow.”

It’s not the first time that Pink has shared a photo of herself breastfeeding on the go. Back in April, she posted another photo of herself feeding Jameson while on a hike, captioning the shot “Hiking makes us thirsty.”

It’s an adorable photo, sure. But what we really love about it is that it shows a beautiful—and nourishing—moment between mother and child. And that’s really all breastfeeding is. After all, a baby’s got to eat when a baby’s got to eat!

Other celebs have also fought to normalize breastfeeding. Just last week, Amanda Seyfried fired back at parent-shamers who felt entitled to comment on how a woman chooses to feed her child. “Breastfeeding is awesome,” she wrote on Instagram. “Formula is awesome. Feeding your baby is awesome. Not awesome? Judgement.” She then went on to share a series of quotes from writer and activist Maureen Shaw about the stigma attached to breastfeeding. “Breasts are intended to feed babies. With all our progress on feminist issues, how can such a simple biological imperative remain so stigmatized? In a word: sex. We live in a culture comfortable with exploiting breasts to sell burgers, for goodness sake.”

Last year, model Candice Swanepoel opened up on Instagram about a time she was shamed for breastfeeding in public, writing “The world has been desensitized to the sexualization of the breast and to violence on tv. Why should it be different when it comes to breastfeeding? Breastfeeding is not sexual, it’s natural.”

Olivia on why it feels natural to be photographed while breast-feeding Otis...
“Being shot with Otis is so perfect because any portrait of me right now isn’t complete without my identity as a mother being a part of that. Breast-feeding is the most natural thing. I don’t know, now it feels like Otis should always be on my breast. It felt like we were capturing that multifaceted woman we’ve been discussing—that we know we can be. You can be someone who is at once maternal and professional and sexy and self-possessed. [But] I mean, I certainly don’t really look like that when I’m [typically] breast-feeding. And there’s usually a diaper involved.”

In 2014, Olivia Wilde came under fire when a photo of her breastfeeding her son Otis appeared in an issue of Glamour. She publicly dismissed the negative feedback, calling the photo a “very organic moment.” “I was working…and I needed to feed my son,” Wilde explained of the shot. “Either I was going to do it off-camera or on, and I thought, ‘You know what—shoot it, because this is part of my real life.'”

And of course, who could forget the 2013 photo that Gisele posted to Instagram. Similarly to Pink, she was sitting in a makeup chair when her daughter Vivian decided she was ready for a snack.

We love that these moms are standing up not only for themselves, but for all women. Here’s hoping the rest of the world catches on soon enough. We can’t wait for the day when photos like these are no longer seen as revelatory, but for what they truly are: a perfectly normal moment in the life of a mom and a baby.
