Arya Stark’s behavior this season on Game of Thrones has been…strange, to say the least. We all know she’s a deadly assassin now. Her stealth skills will come in handy when/if she fights the White Walkers—and they certainly helped during her visit to Walder Frey—but they’re hurting her now that she’s back in Winterfell. Her relationship with her sister, Sansa, is more strained than ever. (Last week, she threatened to cut off Sansa’s face. Yeah…) And this is exactly what Littlefinger wants: to drive a wedge between the Stark women. Remember, he lured Arya to the letter Sansa wrote Robb in season one so she’d think Sansa’s betraying their family—and she does. On the outside, it seems like his plan is working.
But what if Arya’s weird behavior is an act? What if she actually has the upper hand? That’s what one Redditor thinks. In a meticulously detailed theory, the user suggests Arya is intentionally acting antagonistic so Littlefinger thinks she and Sansa are on the outs—but in reality she’s had her sister’s back this entire time. This, obviously, is what we want to believe.
Here’s a link to the entire theory, but below are the highlights if you don’t want to end up in an endless click hole.
1. Arya is trained in stealth. Think back to last week’s episode. Sansa wasn’t able to quietly sneak into Arya’s bed chamber because of the squeaky door; however, Arya got inside without making a noise. She knows how to move around undetected, which means there’s no way Littlefinger would’ve noticed she was following him two episodes back—unless she wanted him to.
2. The Game of Faces scene. This happened in last week’s episode, too. Arya literally tells Sansa that she’s lying during this entire monologue, which suggests it’s all for show. If this theory holds water, Arya doesn’t actually want to cut Sansa’s face off; she just wants Littlefinger to think she does.
3. The public nature of Arya and Sansa’s fights. Two of the big disagreements they’ve had this season happened where people were in earshot. “When Arya confronts Sansa about the Northern lords talking badly about Jon in S7E5, the door is wide open,” the super fan writes. “Similarly, when Arya confronts Sansa about the letter from S1, Arya projects her voice just as she is reading the letter.” But why would they air their dirty laundry so loudly? Maybe so Littlefinger can hear. Dun dun duuuuun.
We’re very here for this theory, TBH. Anything that makes Arya the hero and Littlefinger the scrub is A-plus.
