Even if you’ve never watched a single episode of ‘Game of Thrones,’ you know that Daenerys (played by Emilia Clarke) has epic hair. There’s just so much to love: It’s long, silver, and always features insanely complex and detailed braids.
But there’s more to those braids than Dany’s desire for a strong lewk. As Buzzfeed noticed, the Mother of Dragons is likely spending hours in her Targaryen glam room perfecting her hair because its a symbol of her badass reputation.
Back in season 1, Dany informed her brother of the Dothraki customs, claiming that braids symbolize victories and because he hadn’t made any, he wasn’t permitted to wear one. Snaps fingers like a boss. Dany, however, has earned herself some major braids as the seasons have progressed, which you can see in the photo below. (So no, it’s not just because the show’s hair and makeup budget increased.)
Hair length is also an indicator of successes on the battlefield: When a battle is lost, Dothrakis cut off their braids to wallow in the shame of their defeat. Daenerys’ late husband Khal Drogo had never lost a battle, which is why his hair was long. It told the world he was dangerous and powerful.
So now we’re left to wonder why Emilia Clarke recently went for a short platinum look recently. If we had to guess, we think it might have to do with losing one of her dragons to the Army of the Dead. We wouldn’t be shocked if that was a big enough defeat to force her to cut of her braids in shame. Guess we’ll have to wait and see.
