For Pirelli’s 2017 calendar, we get to see some of Hollywood’s top actresses in a way we rarely do: real.
That’s the most beautiful way to see them, of course. Over the past few years, there has been a cultural shift in terms of Photoshopping celebrities for things like magazine covers and photo shoots. People crave more authenticity, which means they want to see celebrities unretouched and raw. Simply put, they have no time for bogus.
And neither does Peter Lindbergh, the renowned photographer who shot this year’s Pirelli calendar. Lindbergh has been a longtime opponent of excessive retouching, so he kept this year’s crop of photographs as natural as possible. Dubbed “Emotional,” the 2017 calendar features 14 of the world’s most popular actresses posing in grayscale with minimal styling and next to no makeup. Oh, and zero post-production Photoshop. How refreshing is that? (It’s also annoying that such a normal move is “refreshing,” but this is the world we live in.)
“My aim was to portray women in a different way,” Lindbergh said. “And I did it by calling in actresses who’ve played an important role in my life, getting as close as possible to them to take my photos. As an artist, I feel I’m responsible for freeing women from the idea of eternal youth and perfection. The ideal of perfect beauty promoted by society is something that simply can’t be attained.”
He also added that the inspiration for the calendar’s title (“Emotional”) stemmed from wanting to “create a calendar not around perfect bodies, but on sensitivity and emotion, stripping down to the very soul of the sitters, who thus become more nude than naked.” We like the sound of that.
And the look of it, too. This 40 images in the 2017 Pirelli calendar are nothing short of stunning. Just look at this photograph of Julianne Moore.
Nicole Kidman looks gorgeous in this simple, black and white shot.
Uma Thurman is even more breathtaking up close.
Other stars in this year’s calendar include Jessica Chastain, Penélope Cruz, , Rooney Mara, Helen Mirren, Lupita Nyong’o, Charlotte Rampling, Léa Seydoux, Alicia Vikander, Kate Winslet, Robin Wright, and Zhang Ziyi. Anastasia Ignatova, who is a professor of political theory at Moscow State University of International Relations, is also featured.
This is how we need to see every woman. There is nothing more beautiful than reality.
