The Grudge Reboot Gets Insidious Icon Lin Shaye

Lin Shaye, best known for her work in the Insidious franchise, has joined the upcoming reboot of The Grudge. Sony is getting ready to head into production on a new version of The Grudge, which originally debuted for American audiences in 2004. The remake has been in the works for a while now, but seems to be coming together rather quickly and is starting to take shape. Shaye, the latest addition to the cast, is another modern horror icon who has boarded this increasingly intriguing “reimagining” of the supernatural tale.

Recently, it was announced that Andrea Riseborough and Demian Bichir will star in this new take on The Grudge, alongside John Cho. Bichir has become something of a staple in modern horror offerings himself, having starred in Alien: Covenant last year, and also set to feature in the upcoming Conjuring spin-off The Nun. With the addition of Lin Shaye, who has in her own right becoming something of a surprising modern horror icon, the cast of this reboot is shaping up quite nicely. While nobody was really asking for a Grudge reboot, there’s enough here to make it seem like this could be more than a cash grab.

As an actress, Lin Shaye has been working since the 70s and has more than 200 credits to her name. But it’s been her work as Elise Rainier in Blumhouse’s Insidious movies that have really put her on the map, making the 74-year-old actress an unconventional horror heroine. She’s also proved that she can be a box office draw, as she was the lead of this year’s Insidious: The Last Key, which grossed an impressive $166 million worldwide, a new best for the horror franchise. It’s not hard to imagine that helped her land this new role in The Grudge, but at this time, there are no details on the role she’s going to play in the movie.

Nicolas Pesce, who is best known for directing 2016’s horror flick The Eyes of My Mother, has been tapped by Sony to helm this Grudge reboot, from a script he wrote himself. The original 2002 Japanese horror hit, Ju-On: The Grudge, was written and directed by Takashi Shimizu, who also directed the 2004 American remake for Sony, which starred Sarah Michelle-Gellar in the lead role. Shimizu also returned for The Grudge 2. The early 2000s was a popular time for American remakes of Japanese horror, with The Grudge being one of the most popular examples.

The Grudge was a massive hit for Sony at the time, grossing $187.2 million worldwide, working from a budget of just $10 million. Like many studio horror offerings, the movie became a hit despite relatively poor reception from critics. The Grudge currently sits at a 39 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. There’s no release date yet for Sony’s upcoming remake, but Sam Raimi, who produced the 2004 version, is once again on board to produce this take. We’ll be sure to keep you up to date as more details on The Grudge reboot are made available. This news comes to us courtesy of Variety.
