With 50 days and some change left until Solo hits theaters, fans attending the prestigious Cannes Film Festival will be among the first to see it. A new report reveals that, while the festival lineup is still being finalized, Disney and LucasFilm are planning a surprise premiere at the festival, with a special screening on Wednesday, May 15, ahead of the May 25 worldwide release of this Star Wars story. There is no indication yet if any of the stars or if director Ron Howard will be in attendance for this premiere.
It hasn’t been confirmed yet when the U.S. premiere will take place yet either, but it will likely happen sometime after the Cannes premiere screening, perhaps later that week or over the weekend. Many were surprised that Disney and LucasFilm kept the May 25, 2018 release date intact, especially since Ron Howard didn’t wrap his extensive reshoots until October, with some rumors claiming that he reshot, essentially, the entire movie, scrapping everything that Lord and Miller had shot. Still, despite working against the clock, director Ron Howard took to Twitter last week, confirming that the “Edit is locked” and the score by John Powell is complete, adding that they’re, “Right on schedule,” reassuring fans that they will hit the release date on time.
Many are also wondering how Solo will fare in a rather crowded May frame, arriving just a week after 20th Century Fox’s Deadpool 2 sequel, and roughly a month after Avengers: Infinity War debuts, which will certainly dominate at the box office for its first few weeks. The May 25, 2018 release date also marks the 41st anniversary of the very first Star Wars movie, A New Hope, hitting theaters. Solo: A Star Wars story is still expected to fare quite well at the box office, but it may be the first Star Wars movie in four years that doesn’t end up as the top-grossing movie of the year, with many expecting Avengers: Infinity War to take that crown.
