Adam Sandler and his Just Go With It star Jennifer Aniston are finally reuniting, with the stars joining forces for the new Netflix movie Murder Mystery. Insiders claim that both stars had been looking for an opportunity to work together ever since 2011’s Just Go With It, which earned $103 million domestic and $214.9 million worldwide, from an $80 million budget. After seven years of searching, it seems they have finally found the perfect project to reunite with.
The story centers on a New York City cop (Adam Sandler) and his wife (Jennifer Aniston), who surprisingly become prime suspects in the murder of an aging billionaire, while on vacation in Europe. Murder Mystery is Adam Sandler’s sixth movie for Netflix, with four coming under the original deal with his production company Happy Madison, The Ridiculous Six, The Do-Over, Sandy Wexler and the upcoming The Week Of, debuting April 27. His fifth Netflix film was Noah Baumbach’s ensemble The Meyerowitz Stories, which earned Sandler the best reviews of his career and a four-minute standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival.
Netflix also renewed their pact with Adam Sandler’s Happy Madison Productions for four more original movies, and it seems likely that this will be the first project under that new pact, although that has yet to be confirmed. Kyle Newacheck, who recently directed and co-wrote the Netflix comedy movie Game Over, Man with his Workaholics co-stars, has been slated to direct, working from a screenplay by James Vanderbilt (White House Down). No producers are attached at this time but it’s possible that Sandler will produce through Happy Madison while Aniston could also produce through her own company, Echo Films.
This project also reunites James Vanderbilt with Netflix, since he served as an executive producer on the hit series Altered Carbon. He also wrote the screenplay for the upcoming shark thriller The Meg, starring Jason Statham, which hits theaters this August, and he’s attached to write The Janson Directive for star Dwayne Johnson, based on the Robert Ludlum novel. His other writing credits include Independence Day: Resurgence, Truth, which he also directed, both Amazing Spider-Man movies, White House Down, The Losers, Zodiac, The Rundown, Basic and Darkness Falls.
Adam Sandler will next be seen in The Week Of, where he reunites with longtime friend and collaborator Chris Rock, and he also returns to lend his voice to Dracula in the Sony Pictures Animation sequel Hotel Transylvania: Summer Vacation, in theaters July 13. Jennifer Aniston recently signed on to star in a new TV series for the upcoming Apple streaming service, where she’ll star and executive produce alongside Reese Witherspoon. She’ll next be seen on the big screen in Dumplin’, which she also produced, directed by Anne Fletcher (Hot Pursuit), slated to hit theaters later this year. The actress is also slated to star in an untitled project for writer-director Sophie Goodhart. Variety broke the news on this Murder Mystery project coming together with Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston.
