Netflix Gets Disney, Marvel, Star Wars Exclusively in September

It is no secret that streaming services are the wave of the future when it comes to TV and movies, and it is even less of a secret that Netflix is the king in terms of subscription streaming services available to consumers. Yes, HBO NOW, Amazon Instant and Hulu have found their way in the game and have their own benefits, but Netflix is still ahead of the pack and it looks like they are about to further cement their place at the top of the heap. The company inked a deal quite some time ago to get exclusive rights to every Disney film and starting in September, that deal goes into effect.

The deal was initially reached way back in 2012 and it has been a bit of a lengthy process to actually get the wheels in motion to make it happen, but thanks to a recent post on the official Netflix Blog, we now know in just a few short months they will have a huge leg up on the competition. This isn’t just proper Disney, but everything the company owns including Lucasfilm’s Star Wars movies, Pixar and of course, Marvel. The company wasn’t shy about seeming almost cocky about the deal in their post.

“From September onwards, Netflix will become the exclusive US pay TV home of the latest films from Disney, Marvel, Lucasfilm and Pixar.”

Essentially what this means is that right after movies hit the shelves on DVD and Blu Ray, they will make their way to Netflix and will never make it to other streaming services as long as the deal is in place. The movies will be available exclusively to stream on Netflix for the same period of time that they would usually be shown on standard cable TV, so though the movies will eventually find their way to more traditional outlets, it will be an even longer wait than usual. The landmark deal didn’t come cheap though, as Netflix is reportedly paying hundreds of millions of dollars per year for the rights to all of Disney‘s theatrical releases from 2016 and beyond.

The deal is uniting two companies in the current media landscape who are enjoying success on a level that their competitors can only look at with envy and try to duplicate as best as possible. Netflix has enjoyed massive success with their original programming of late and are getting into the film game as well, with Brad Pitt’s new film War Machine coming to the streaming service later this year. Disney, on the other hand, has been the unchallenged king of the box office in recent years on a level that is almost staggering. This year alone Zootopia, The Jungle Book and Captain America: Civil War all held the top spot at the box office for multiple weeks and the studio has plenty more on their release schedule this year, including Doctor Strange in November and Alice Through The Looking Glass, which will be going head to head with X-Men: Apocalypse this weekend.

Netflix has been facing a bit of competition recently in terms of acquiring quality, licensed films and TV for its streaming service, as Hulu recently made a big push to get more current and big name films and Amazon has been securing exclusives left and right, not to mention HBO NOW is able to get many big films shortly after the Blu Ray releases hit shelves. However, this deal will see Netflix get some of the most anticipated films of the next handful of years before anyone else such as Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Finding Dory and all of the Marvel movies. Not that most people had any issues with paying their monthly Netflix subscription fee anyway, but this surely will make it a little easier for many people to pony up the dough every month.
