Model Rachel Ricket, 27, claims she was fired by car manufacturer Hyundai for being on her period.
Not that type of period.
While working as a brand ambassador (an attractive person paid to pass out fliers) at New York International Auto Show, Ricket asked her boss for a toilet break so she could change her tampon. Her boss refused, claiming their booth was too busy, so she had no choice but to expell menses all over her underwear and tights.
Yup, just like that.
Later that day, Ricket received a text from her boss telling her that Hyundai wanted her to take the night off. A day later, after Hyundai heard about her period incident, they no longer wanted her to work at the auto show.
“I was completely puzzled,” she said in an interview with the BBC. “I was really upset. I started crying… I book out shows, and I miss other opportunities. So I was just like – ‘What? This is not right!'” Understandably, Ricket filed a complaint with the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission against both her boss’s brand ambassador company and Hyundai.
In her BBC interview, Ricket continued. “I’m not going to let people treat women this way,” she said. “It’s a natural thing that we have, our periods, and it’s not like I want special treatment because of it. I just want to be respected as a human and to be able to go to the restroom. And not to be considered a bad employee because I needed to use the bathroom.”
Unless Hyundai wants to supply their models with giant diapers, they should probably soften the way they treat female employees that just need to use the bathroom. On the other hand, if they are supplying their models with giant diapers, my only question is “are you hiring?”
