Sounds like heavy metal icons Metallica might soon being doing a thrashing cover of “I Left My Heart In San Francisco.” The Bay Area Thrashers are losing a member of the four piece to Colorado. Singer- guitarist James Hetfield is disheartened that liberal minded members of his community will seek and destroy anyone that does not share their views.
The Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame group is synonymous with the Bay Area and San Francisco, having started in the underground thrash metal scene there in the early 80’s, after moving up from LA, and since have played the National Anthem numerous times at Giants Stadium and even released a live album accompanied by the San Francisco Orchestra.
However in a recent interview on Joe Rogan’s podcast Hetfield sounds like he is sick of the master of puppets that control California politics. He said;
“I kind of got sick of the Bay Area, the attitudes of the people there, a little bit. They talk about how diverse they are, and things like that, and it’s fine if you’re diverse like them,” Hetfield said. “But showing up with a deer on the bumper doesn’t fly in Marin County. My form of eating organic doesn’t vibe with theirs.”
It’s 2016 so as a Metallica fan when I saw that “James Hetfield” was trending on social media my heart sank fearing a creeping death. It turns out he is healthy and fine and just moving to Vail, Colorado to enjoy nature where people won’t give him the stink eye for hunting.
Hetfield doesn’t completely hate SanFran, and says that folks there are not all unforgiven and appreciates their values, saying;
“I love the ocean, and I love the Bay Area, I love what it’s got to offer, but there’s just an attitude that it was… It wasn’t healthy for me. No one’s right, no one’s wrong. This is my life; I like living it this way. You like living your life that way. I totally get it,” Hetfield said. “But we can coexist in this. And let’s really be diverse.”
Nobody tell Lars that James is moving.
Hetfield stresses in the interview that his views do not necessarily represent how the rest of the band feels. He may actually be getting away from the liberal, elitist attitudes of his co-workers. As it turns out the front man isn’t the only member of Metallica that may be moving soon. Danish born drummer Lars Ulrich said during the election that if Donald Trump became President of The United States he would move back to his native homeland.
“I’ll stick to my Danish passport,” Ulrich said. “If Trump becomes president and everything goes to s—t, I might make my way to the airport and ask if I can get back in again.”
While it is probably a good idea to avoid discussing politics with co-workers Lars recently also said in an interview that he and Hetfield have NEVER discussed politics in the thirty plus years they have been banging heads together. Sounds like that is probably for good reason!
For conservatives these statements from James Hetfield are going to make him the hero of the day. However like James said; to each his own. Even liberal minded metal heads who were Feeling the Bern this year, can appreciate the sick burns of Hetfield’s shredding on the new Metallica album, Hardwired… To Self Destruct.
