Mel Gibson Channels Mad Max in Blood Father Trailer

It’s been two years since we’ve seen Mel Gibson on the big screen, playing General Stonebanks in Lionsgate’s action-packed sequel The Expendables 3. Many fans were hoping that the actor would reprise his role as Max Rockatansky in George Miller’s long-awaited sequel Mad Max: Fury Road, but Tom Hardy ended up taking the role instead. Next month, Mel Gibson returns to the silver screen in Blood Father, and you can see in the first trailer that his character John Link shares some similarties with Max Rockatansky.

Blood Father stars Mel Gibson as John Link, an ex-convict who fights to protect his estranged daughter from the drug cartel that is hunting her down. In this thrilling action film, John must use his connections from his past life and his skills as an ex-criminal to keep him and his daughter alive. Blood Father also stars Erin Moriarty, Diego Luna, Michael Parks, and William H. Macy. Blood Father will be released by Lionsgate Premiere in theaters August 12, 2016.

This new action-thriller will go up against Sony’s animated comedy Sausage Party, Disney’s live-action remake of Pete’s Dragon and Paramount’s Florence Foster Jenkins. It isn’t known how wide a release the movie will get, but it will also go up against Anthropod, The Fight Within, Ghost Team, Hell or High Water and The King in limited release. We’ll have to wait and see if this new Mel Gibson movie can make a dent at the box office as summer winds down.

Jean-François Richet (Assault on Precinct 13) is directing from a screenplay by Peter Craig (The Town) and Andrea Berloff (Straight Outta Compton), based on Peter Craig’s own novel. Chris Briggs is producing for Why Not Productions. Shooting took place last year in New Mexico.

Along with the trailer, we also have a new poster for Blood Father, which you can check out below.
