Lorde is facing some backlash after she posted a photo to Instagram that many view as a dig at Whitney Houston. Last night (April 5) the “Green Light” singer posted a picture of the bath she was running for herself on her day off and captioned it with lyrics from Houston’s classic take on Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You.” Given that Houston, as you know, died in 2012 after accidentally drowning in a bath tub, many felt this was an insensitive reference. And they weren’t happy about it.
Below are just a few of the responses people had to Lorde’s photo, which has since been removed from Instagram:
Lorde was quick to apologize for her post, though, saying she meant no disrespect by the caption and that it was a poor choice of words. “Extremely extremely poorly chosen quote,” she wrote on Instagram Stories. “I’m so sorry for offending anyone—I hadn’t even put this together I was just excited to take a bath. I’m an idiot. Love Whitney forever and ever. Sorry again.”
Many people came to Lorde’s defense before she even posted an apology and said it was clear she wasn’t mocking Houston with her post. “Y’all really think Lorde did that on purpose,” one person wrote. “I know y’all aren’t attacking lorde for a mistake and poor choice of words when you’re on here purposely making jokes not only about whitney’s death but almost every other celebrity who has ever died,” another person tweeted.
Lorde’s been open in the past about how much she loves Houston and has even covered her songs in concerts before. Here’s her rendition of “I Wanna Dance With Somebody”:
Lorde’s performing in New Jersey tonight (April 6), which, coincidentally, is where Houston was born. Stay tuned to see if she addresses this in any way during her show.
