Logan's Run Remake Finally Moves Forward with X-Men 7 Director

Warner Bros. is currently developing a Logan’s Run remake that will reportedly be directed by X-Men: Dark Phoenix director Simon Kinberg with a script by Hunger Games scribe Peter Craig. Joining the ranks of the new dystopian projects including Black Mirror, Fahrenheit 451, and Blade Runner 2049, the Logan’s Run remake will be right at home. No production start date or casting has been officially announced, but it looks like the new movie will join another popular trend at the moment of swapping the main character from a male to a female.

The Logan’s Run remake has been talked about for years, but it is believed that a deal with Warner Bros. was closed earlier this week, meaning that we are one step closer to seeing the project on the big screen. The idea of for this remake came about in the 1990s and was brought up again in the early 2000s, both of which were said to cover the source material faithfully, unlike the original 1976 movie that spawned a short-lived TV series and a Marvel Comics series.

Logan’s Run is based off of the 1967 novel written by William F. Noland and George Clayton Johnson. The 1976 movie made some major changes to the source material and has always been a point of contention by fans of Noland and Johnson’s book, which has led to speculation that the new remake will follow in the line of the rumored 1990s and 2000s idea, but with a woman in the main character role. The 1976 movie starred Michael York and Farrah Fawcett and was a success at the box office, helping MGM to get out of debt upon its release.

Logan’s Run takes place in a utopian society, which quickly turns dystopian for Logan 5, in the future where the world is run in equilibrium by population and consumption. In the original book, adults are killed off at the age of 21, but the movie chose the age of 30. The story follows Logan 5, a Sandman killer, who killed many people as they reached the age of 30, as he runs off with Jessica, while being chased by another Sandman, after he faces death himself. The movie only utilized the basic structure of the book and the title.

There have been numerous directors and actors attached to the Logan’s Run remake for decades now, but it looks like this could be the one to finally make it to the finish line. The climate is definitely right for a Logan’s Run remake, but will moviegoers be sick of the dystopian future since it’s been so heavily covered in the last few years? Only time will tell, and we still don’t even have a cast at the moment, so it could be a while before the Logan’s Run remake joins the list of the many remakes and reboots out there. This report originally came from Deadline.
