In a sketch on Corden’s Late Late Show Monday night, Candace Payne enjoys her new toy while the late night host, in the passenger seat, grumbles about being late.
“I have got to get to work. Is there any way we can leave now?” Corden pleas.
“I’m such a happy Chewbacca!” Payne cheers before bursting into laughter again.
“I know you’re a happy Chewbacca,” replies a grumpy Corden before adding that the character’s mask sounds nothing like the real thing.
Suddenly, Star Wars director J.J. Abrams – who has “been here the whole time” – gives a quick note to perfect Payne’s Wookiee impression with his own Chewie mask.
Corden, who had been playing like he was annoyed, finally joins in the fun.
Corden also sat down with the Dallas mother of two, where she explained why she made the video that made her an internet sensation.
“I’m a stay-at-home mom. I only had a few minutes before I had to go get my kids from school. I wanted to prove to all my Facebook friends and family that that mask was mine,” Payne tells Corden. “I knew the moment [my children] saw it, they were going to take it from me. And I’m like, ‘I didn’t buy it for you, little kids.’ I love you, but this isn’t for you”
Payne says she had to text a friend when she saw the video had 1,000 views. By the time she went to bed that day, it was at 1 million. When she woke up the next morning, there were over 20 million views.
Corden also had a surprise for Payne – a message from Peter Mayhew, the actor who wore the Chewbacca suit in the classic Star Wars movies. Mayhew praised her joyous video and its message to enjoy the little things and invited her to a fan expo in her hometown so he could meet her.
