The national anthem protests were, at one point, about police brutality and how African Americans are treated differently in the eyes of the law. To quote Kaepernick, who started the whole thing in the first place:
I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color. To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder.
But in true American fashion, we’ve managed to take that one simple purpose and turn it into liberals vs. conservatives, blue vs. red or Fox News vs. MSNBC. Regardless of where you stand (or kneel) on the issue, I think we can all come together to agree that this Jets fan is a fucking idiot.
This is what is wrong with America: we’ve got all this manufactured outrage flying around and we can’t even be fucking consistent about it. You want NFL players to stand for the anthem? Fine. Then don’t get caught sitting on the fucking flag when you’re not even outside – dude is sitting on TURF. There’s no way that shit is even the slightest bit damp, yet his dainty lil’ hiney apparently can’t handle the friction.
In the end, this photo doesn’t even matter. It’s not going to change anyone’s opinion on anything because at the end of the day, we’re all stuck inside our own little bubbles clinging to our own thoughts and screaming “LA LA LA LA LA I CAN’T HEAR YOU” at anyone who voices anything even slightly contrary.
Welcome to 2017: your opinion matters as long as you realize no one cares.
