How Guardians of the Galaxy Fit Into Infinity War

All of the characters in Infinity War will have emotional stakes in the movie, otherwise they wouldn’t be there, according to the Russo Brothers. The directors have revealed that the Guardians of the Galaxy have a major role in the upcoming Infinity War, which should help Marvel fans who believed that there are too many characters in the movie to get any relevant screen time, breathe a sigh of relief. Some fans were under the impression that all of the characters might have just been thrown into the mix, to throw as many franchises into one movie as possible, but that isn’t the case.

In a new interview, the Russo Brothers admit that the Guardians of the Galaxy have a “great role” in Infinity War. This makes perfect sense, especially when you think of the major emotional ties that the group has to the villainous Thanos. Drax the Destroyer blames Thanos for the death of his family since Ronan was working for the Mad Titan at the time. Nebula and Gamora have their own family reasoning to hate Josh Brolin’s big bad for the torture that he put them through as children.

When asked about the Guardians of the Galaxy in the grand scope of Infinity War, the Russo Brothers stated that they wouldn’t be there if it weren’t for their emotional ties to the story. Infinity War will honor the characters from all of the different franchises. In addition, the directors admit that they need a reason to be there to make it worthwhile. They explain.

“They have a great role in this film. Everyone is interwoven into this plot, in a way where they have an emotional connection to the story and are emotionally effected by the stakes in the movie. You can’t tell a movie with this many characters, and not have each of those characters show up, honor them from their different franchises, if they are not motivated to be there, if they are not in life or death circumstances, if they are not fighting to save their belief system, or their way of life.”

When asked about bringing in some of director James Gunn’s tone into the movie, the Russo Brothers revealed that they had to find a way to make them fit, as well as honor them. Basically, they’re the same characters, but filtered through the Russo Brothers lens. In the end, the directors liken it to what they were able to pull off with Captain America: Winter Soldier. They had this to say.

“Specific to the Guardians, we have to find a way to bring those tones in, honor them, but also make them work with what we’re doing with the movie. I think the way that we find the best way to do that, is to filter these things through our very personal expression of them, as characters. It’s not dissimilar to what we did with Cap in Winter Soldier. There’s a movement with the characters, towards a more Russo brothers execution.”

Finally, the Russo Brothers were asked about the possibility of Peter Quill, aka Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), returning to Earth for the first time since he was kidnapped by Ravagers as a child. Specifically, they were asked if there was room for this type of storyline. They said.

“There’s a lot of characters in the film, and there are a lot of people who are dealing with a lot of issues in a lot of moments, and you look to do the best that you can with each of those characters in the storytelling. We’ll get into whether Quill returns to Earth or not, but certainly, Earth is a pivotal player. But as is Space. So there’s a lotta stories we told in this one.”

While the Russo Brothers don’t explicitly state that Earth and Peter Quill will have some space in the story, they do say that Earth is a big component to the story, which we already knew. They also mention that space is a big part of the story, so we’ll just have to wait and see.
