Black Panther Sprints Past Wonder Woman at the Box Office

Marvel’s Black Panther earned $10.1 million on its 12th day of release to become the 20th highest domestic grossing movie of all time, with $421.8 million, sailing past Wonder Woman and its previous holding of $412.6 million. The movie has also gone on to become one of the biggest in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and is pumping up the hype for the upcoming Infinity War to insane levels. Infinity War and the untitled Avengers 4 will be the next time we get to see Chadwick Boseman’s Black Panther on the big screen.

In addition to moving past last summer’s Wonder Woman, Black Panther has also passed up Disney and Pixar’s Toy Story, which was at $415 million previously. The new spot for Black Panther places it $1 million behind Disney’s The Lion King, which it will pass this week for the 19th spot. Additionally, the movie is expected to earn the number one spot at the box office for the third week in a row, edging out newcomers Red Sparrow and Death Wish.

Black Panther is currently at $748.1 million worldwide, placing it behind Wonder Woman‘s final haul of $821,847,012 after 23 weeks in the theater. However, Black Panther will go on to beat this record since it’s already nearly there in a fraction of the time that Wonder Woman was in theaters. The movie is currently 86th on the list of the highest grossing movies worldwide and has beat out Suicide Squad with $746.8 million and X-Men: Days of Future Past at $747.9 million. At less than three weeks in, Black Panther‘s box office future is looking very bright.

Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther has become a cultural phenomenon since its release and has ended up putting Disney in direct competition with itself, notes CEO Bob Eiger. Earlier this week, Eiger spoke about the immense popularity of Black Panther and the possibility of a theme park ride in the near future while also stating that there’s going to be a lot of Black Panthers running around this Halloween. Eiger was not kidding about the direct competition. Black Panther has just edged out two of Disney’s must beloved movies in only 3 weeks at the box office and it will more than likely do some more damage in the coming weeks.

Black Panther is heading into its third week in theaters and continuing to break records after shattering its initial tracking of $100 million to $120 million, shocking nearly everybody that had been doing the tracking. Despite the efforts of online trolls to sabotage the user reviews on Rotten Tomatoes and IMDB, nothing seems to be stopping Black Panther at this point. But will it join the highly coveted $1 billion club? That’s the real question now and it has quite a while to go. You can check out the box office earnings of Black Panther via Box Office Mojo.
