Earlier today we shared with you the viral video of a man punching a Kangaroo in the FACE in order to save his dog. In the shocking vid originally shared on Facebook, a man named Greig Tonkins is seen bopping the maniac marsupial who had his pet in a freakin’ headlock. In case you missed it here is what everyone is calling the “Most Australian Video Of All Time.”
It turns out that in addition to being a badass example of how they do things down under, The Kangaroo Boxing matchup has bit of an endearing backstory. Tonkins, who works as a zoo keeper was part of a boar hunting expedition in New South Wales that was organized as a last wish for his friend Kailem who was dying of cancer.
Kailem and Matt Amor on the hunting trip in June.
Mathew Amor organized the hunting trip this last June when the Kangaroo punch occurred. Kailem had wanted to catch a boar so they went on a hunting trip as one last hurrah with the guys. Amor says;
“And so a few of us got together to take him out, and another mate filmed more than an hour of video to put together as a DVD for Kailem and his family of the trip.”
Note to self: don’t mess with Roos.
Ironically the who punched the Kangaroo is normally a pretty tame, laid back guy who as a zookeeper would of course never want to hit an animal. His buddies thought it was pretty funny that he found himself in this situation, busting his balls for throwing such a weak punch and not hitting the kangaroo harder.
“It was funny because the guy who did it is the most placid bloke. We laughed at him for chucking such a shit punch.”
Sadly Kailem passed away last week and his friends were sharing memories from their boar hunting- kangaroo punching adventure when the clip went viral.
“Kailem would be looking down from up there [heaven] and laughing because it was the highlight of the trip,” Amor says.
