An Injured, Abandoned Baby Elephant Receives Hydrotherapy To Help Her Walk Again

A six-month-old baby elephant injured herself badly after stepping into a trap laid by farmers in Thailand to protect their crops.
The poor baby was found hobbling and alone after being separated from her mother.

She was rescued by a local animal hospital where she received surgery on the damaged foot.
To help strengthen the muscles in her left leg, her caretakers decided to use hydrotherapy.

The therapy is expected to last for a couple of months, after which it is hoped that she will not need an artificial leg in order to support her increasing weight.

“She is still a bit nervous and scared of the water,” veterinarian Padet Siridumrong said. “But if she can do this regularly she will have fun.”

The veterinarian says “by her fourth or fifth session, she will enjoy swimming more.”
