Next time you try to force your dog to wear an “adorable” Christmas garment, just remember that not all hounds are down to show off their holiday spirit in the same manner. A Florida family learned this lesson the hard way when they attempted to coax their pit bull into a Christmas sweater – only to get mauled by the unhappy canine.
The scary incident took place on New Year’s Eve, when 52-year-old Brenda Guerrero of Tampa tried to place the festive sweater onto her dog, Scarface. Instead of complying with his owner’s command, Scarface brutally attacked her.
When 46-year-old Ismael Guerrero desperately tried to break up the chaos between the pit bull and his wife, Scarface went on to maul him instead, forcing their 22-year-old son, Antoine Harris, to stab the dog in the head and neck until Scarface turned on him, too.
The nightmarish scene finally came to an end when the three failed dog dressers retreated into the house and called Hillsborough County Animal Control. Authorities arrived onto the scene and nailed Scarface with a tranquilizer gun, but the move only prompted the enraged pooch to storm into the house, where two children were hiding.
Animal Control officers eventually had to blast Scarface with a bean bag gun and a Taser to get him to subdue, which led to a run-in with a “catch pole” that rendered the dog unable to continue on his rampage.
Brenda and Ismael Guerrero were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment; Brenda’s injuries were found to be serious but not life-threatening, while Ismael got off with minor wounds.
“Officers responding said the dog was pretty aggressive,” Eddy Durkin with the Tampa Police told WFTS. “When they Tasered the dog, it was still pulling away and was able to release the prongs.”
According to neighbors, the Guerrero family had only had Scarface for about a month before the terrifying attack took place. The out-of-control dog would often escape from their yard and run around the neighborhood until either Ismael or Brenda managed to wrangle him back into place.
No word has surfaced as to the fate that Scarface will suffer now that he has proven himself a danger to both himself and others. He is currently under the custody of Animal Control and will potentially be put to sleep if he is not deemed stable enough to rehome… or to wear Christmas sweaters at his owner’s discretion.
Scarface is not the only Florida pit bull to ring in the new year by utterly misbehaving: Donald Sigman of Pensacola lost his beloved Chihuahua to a pit bull attack on the weekend before Christmas. Two pit bulls, both of them off their leashes, mauled the tiny dog before Sigman – who is disabled – could pull them away.
“They basically sawed my Babi in half,” Sigman told the Pensacola News Journal. The tragic incident took place just weeks before the Escambia County Board of Commissioners was set to weigh in on an ordinance that would allow animal control officers to deem an animal dangerously aggressive based on their own judgment after only one attack.
