Unexpected Benefit Of ‘Black Panther’: The Increased Adoption Of Black Cats
March 1, 2018
The box office smash Black Panther is increasing the adoption of black cats in shelters.
Shelters in Colorado have seen all of their black cats find homes since the film was released.
For centuries, black cats have been associated with bad luck and horror movies. As a result, their adoption rates are much lower than other cats. One study suggests that even in cultures where people don’t think about black cats negatively, they still have a tendency to walk right past them at shelters.
“Black cats are two-thirds less likely to get adopted than white cats and only half as likely to be adopted as tabby cats,” according to PETA.
It’s not clear whether this trend is spreading across shelters worldwide, but it’s a step in the right direction.
